Question: Can I sing or play an instrument and have the computer write it down (pitch to MIDI)?
Answer: Converting what you play or sing to notation is called "pitch to MIDI". This
is a very difficult process, and only really works for monophonic (single
melody) music. In other words, a computer cannot listen to a chord or choir and
write down all of the notes. There are some programs that attempt to do this,
but our experience with them so far is that they are not very successful.
AudioScore will convert monophonic music to MIDI so that you can edit, transpose, arrange or print music. It can record directly from a microphone, or you may import a monophonic wave file.
Make Music includes Pitch to MIDI in their programs. They call the
feature "Mic Notator" and it is included in in
Print Music, Allegro and
Finale.
