For over twenty years, Max has been used by performers, artists, and composers to make cutting-edge work by connecting basic functional blocks together into unique applications. Max gives you the parts to make your own music, sound, video, and interactive media applications. Simply add objects to a visual canvas and connect them together to make noise, experiment, and play.
Visual Programming
Create media-rich interactive software by arranging boxes and connecting them together.
Discover what happens when you start building things and connecting them together. Explore sounds, images, and interfaces in new combinations. Building programs in Max is a fluid and visual process. You create programs while they are running. You make changes and see or hear the results immediately. Since your patch is easy to change, it can continue to grow and adapt to new situations. The big idea of Max is this: when you create your own tools, your tools can grow along with you.
Audio and Music
Take control of your sound with your own custom sound-making, sequencing, and effects.
With most software, there is one way to make music. We prefer not to impose our ideas on you. Instead, Max lets you expand your own ideas of what music and sound can be by letting you develop the rules. Create tonal behaviors, compositional machines, and non-linear sequences. Control it all with a joystick, a keyboard, or just about anything you can connect to your computer. Experiment with new forms, new rhythms, and new ways to experience sound.
Build your own world of sounds utilizing sample-manipulation, synthesis tools, high-quality filters, spectral processing, real-time recording and playback. Process, resample, slice, and modulate everything in any combination.
Video with Jitter
Combine live video with real-time animation and effects to create unique visual experiences.
Jitter provides a complete toolkit for developing your own video effects and graphics in Max. Control visuals with audio, MIDI, or any other data source. Integrate vector graphics, compositing effects, color manipulations, and Quicktime videos with Jitter’s diverse set of objects. Create live overlays and manipulate live video input from a variety of supported sources.
3D Graphics
Generate stunning graphics with hardware-accelerated 3D drawing, physics, animation, and 3D models.
Jitter includes a collection of objects that work with the hardware-accelerated OpenGL 3D rendering system. With these objects, you can create your own 3D worlds, complete with lighting, materials, and multiple cameras. Animate 3D models in real-time with support for Collada and other popular model file formats. Jitter also includes objects that let you perform image processing on the GPU, by taking advantage of OpenGL Shader technology. With a node-based rendering system, you can combine 3D rendering with shader effects to build complex visual systems.
In addition to the graphics rendering capabilities, Jitter also includes an advanced 3D physics engine and tools for 3D animation control.
Physical Computing
Connect sensors and electronics to Max to create interactive and responsive media.
With support for a variety of hardware interfaces, Max is a perfect tool for quickly developing applications that interact with the outside world. Capture sensor data through an Arduino or Eobody interface, and immediately see the data stream in your Max patch. As you watch the numbers stream in, you can quickly add filters and scaling to get your data to behave the right way. Then convert this sensor data to sounds and visual displays by connecting a few objects. With the ability to communicate with other applications and a variety of hardware, Max is the glue that holds your project together. Combining physical inputs and outputs with the media and prototyping capabilities of Max will unlock computing potential that is very difficult to achieve in other environments.
Max natively supports the following hardware and communication protocols:
- MIDI – The Classic Protocol for Musical Control
- Serial – Arduino and other Microcontrollers
- OpenSoundControl – Networked Communication and Hardware
- HID – USB Joysticks and Input Devices
Show Control
Quickly develop your own adaptable solutions for integrating music, controllers, lighting, and visuals.
Discover why Max is the secret ingredient in some of the most impressive live events. With tools to combine MIDI data, sound input and analysis, communication across networks, and an extensible tool set, Max gives you all the tools to connect a variety of music, video, control, and lighting systems together. Use audio and pitch analysis to create video and lighting cues that follow a performance. Automate cues with generative data techniques, or tightly sync up with an incoming control stream. Take MIDI output from an Ableton Live set and connect it to your other show elements for seamless control. Integrate standard MIDI or OSC controller devices, or connect custom hardware to control the show. A full suite of media playback, display, and processing tools lets you create custom visuals and show control systems that are unlike any other.
